An Easy DIY Christmas Village Using Dollar Tree Ornaments

For me, a Christmas village is a must when decorating for the holidays, but then, I love all things miniature. Every year I’m inspired to create something a bit different from the traditional. I hope you enjoy what I came up with this time.

Let’s make an easy DIY Christmas village using Dollar Tree ornaments along with other supplies you can also find at Dollar Tree.

An Easy DIY Christmas Village Using Dollar Tree Ornaments

I found these adorable house ornaments at Dollar Tree early in the season. I knew what I wanted to do with them, so I bought two of the green houses so I would have three buildings for my Christmas village.

Step 1: Repaint

I removed the wreaths and the hangers. The loops holding the twine are easy to break off. I wasn’t that thrilled with the original finish on these houses but, due to unseasonably warm weather this November, I was still able to go outside to spray paint. The first house got a fresh coat of green paint and I also repainted the church in its original colour. The second green house got two coats of red spray paint.

Now I was ready to redecorate them.

Step 2: Add Garland Embellishments

I reused one of the original wired wreaths by cutting the circle open and repurposing it as a garland to frame the door of the church. It already had red berries on it.

I hadn’t saved the wreaths from the other two buildings, so I cut two short pieces of wired pine and kept cutting the fronds until they were a width approximately the same size as the original wreaths.

The red house got a garland at its peak. I trimmed it by cutting some gold berries from one of the wired garlands you can find at Dollar Tree.

I gave the green house a garland across the middle between the windows and glued some berries from another wired garland onto it.

All three buildings got a small wood snowflake glued to the peak. These wood embellishments come in red, white and green. This is optional, but I thought they made a nice finishing touch.

Step 3: Make a Base For the Christmas Village

Now, I needed a base for my Christmas village. I used a long tray along with a white microfiber cloth that would stand in as snow. It doesn’t matter what colour the tray is. These trays are a staple at Dollar Tree.

By turning the tray upside down, you create a sort of riser for the village. Start by hot gluing the fabric around one side and the back edge of the tray. I made sure the finished edge of the cloth was glued to the front of the base for a cleaner look.

Trim the excess fabric…

…and add a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of the tray before smoothing down the fabric and securing all of the remaining edges. Do any additional trimming that may be necessary.

Step 4: Add Houses and Figurines

I determined where I wanted each building to be positioned and hot glued them in place near the back of the base.

Step 4: Add Trimmings

I forgot to take a picture, but I used some fabric glue to add ribbon all the way around the lip of the tray. I only secured the ribbon at the corners and in the centre of the riser on the long edges. Fabric glue generally takes from 2 to 4 hours to dry. Afterward, I cut the tips off of two pine picks and hot glued them in the centre at the front of the base.

Next, I found two medium sized pine cones in my stash to glue at the centre of the pine. They were trimmed with gold glitter like the pine stems, which was perfect.

Completed Christmas Village

I added some miniature pine trees and a couple of resin pieces from my miniatures collection and arranged them for a balanced look. Most dollar stores have miniature people and other accessories suitable for a Christmas village.

I’m glad I took the time to make the buildings look a bit different from each other. I love how this DIY Christmas village turned out.
