I love candles and the soft flicker of candlelight. Candles seem particularly appropriate during the holiday season, maybe because they mirror the warm glow we feel within ourselves at this time of the year. Candles also make a wonderful way to decorate. You can pair them with plants or other decorative objects.
There are so many different sizes and shapes of candles. Choose from pillar candles, taper candles, jar candles, tea lights or votive candles. Choose a scented candle to add an extra layer of atmosphere to a room, or opt for the unscented variety. In recent years, many people have chosen flameless candles as safer options.
There are also different ways to style candles. Display them on a fireplace mantle, on a bookshelf or place them on coffee and end tables. Using candles in lanterns is especially popular during the holiday season.

How to Display Christmas Candles 2024
Idea No. 1: Pretty Candle Trio
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- 12″ cylinder vase
- 9″ cylinder vase (Dollar Tree)
- red taper candles (dollar store)
- crystal vase filler
- small candle rings
I used two cylinder vases for this candle grouping. One is 9-inches tall and the other is 12-inches tall. I rounded out the display with a small fish bowl style glass container.
Fill the bottom quarter of the tall vases with crystal vase filler. You can use epsom salts, if you prefer and sprinkle some faux snow on top to add some sparkle. Next, add some small candle rings.
You can make your own candle rings very easily by twisting some wired pine stem into a ring and decorating it with red berries and additional greenery.
Cut about two inches off the bottom of one of the two taper candles so it will be the right length for the 9-inch glass cylinder vase. Push the candles down through the centre of the candle rings and filler until they feel secure and stand up straight.
Add enough filler to the round vase to make a base for the votive candle and candle ring. Style these together to make a lovely display for an entryway table, coffee table or mantel.
Idea No. 2: Pinned Down Candles for Christmas
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- 2 candle stands
- 2 short pillar candles (dollar store)
- snowflake confetti
- snowflake sticker
- pearl headed straight pins
This ideas makes use of two plain short pillar candles in Christmas red, decorated for the holidays. For the first candle, I used white pearl-headed straight pins to attach snowflake confetti to the candle. I used large pearl-headed pins, as there’s a sizeable hole in the centre of the snowflake confetti that the smaller pins slip right through.
The die-cut silver snowflake sticker on the second candle surprised me by actually sticking to the wax but, to be sure it stayed put, I secured grey pearl-headed straight pins to each point around the snowflake. Display them on a pair of candle stands.
Idea No. 3: Pine and Candle Centrepiece
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- long tray
- glass vase
- pillar candle
- 2 pine boughs
- pine cones
- faux poinsettias
This is a perfect decor piece for a coffee table or dining room table.
Idea No. 4: Votive Candles on a Tray
- round metal tray
- snowflake candle holders (or any tea light holder)
- large bells
- Christmas figurine
- wired pine stems
For this candle tray, I used a round silver-coloured tray, two small wired evergreen stems, three snowflake
tea light holders, three large red bells and a snowman figurine.
I simply put everything on the tray into a pleasing arrangement with the wired boughs creating a border around the edge. The figurine helps to add height, but you could substitute it with something different, if you prefer. The red bells lend some colour and contrast to the white snowflake votive candles. You could also use ornaments instead of the bells.
Idea No. 5: Cocktail Candle Display
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- martini glass
- wired pine stem
- small red bells or berries
- flameless votive candle
To put martini glasses to use as Christmas candle holders, all you need is a bit of artificial snow, a wire evergreen stem, flameless candles and three or four red mini bells to mimic berries or use faux berries pulled from a floral stem you may have on hand.
The evergreen stems came in a package of ten and easily bend to your wishes. We used a battery-operated tealight candle. Flameless candles are always a good option when pairing candles with garlands, floral arrangements or other decorative objects that may catch fire.
These martini glass votive candles would look nice set at intervals down the middle of the dining room table or placed in a grouping on a coffee table.
Idea No. 6: Tray of Candles
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- round tray
- assorted pillar candles, varying heights
- wired pine stems
- mini pine cones
- small ornament
Enhance a grouping of seven pillar candles on a silver-colored tray by circling them with two evergreen stems and a few miniature pine cones. Add a gold ornament tied with some shiny curling ribbon. Keep the ornament in place using a glue dot to adhere it to the tray.
(Note: After using these particular candles at my Christmas gathering, I discovered that they melt into a puddle rather than burning down through the center, so a much larger tray than the one shown here would be prudent.)
Idea No. 7: Pinecones and Pillar Candles
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- medium glass vase
- 6″ pillar candle
- wired pine stem
- mini pine cones
- faux snow
Sometimes, simple makes the most elegant statement. Here, we’ve nestled an ivory pillar candle into a layer of faux snow, encircled it with an artificial pine stem bent into a candle ring and added mini pine cones.
Two like this would look nice on a fireplace mantel or use one in the living room on a side table. This would work well in a powder room where you may have limited counter space.

**Note: I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t repeat the customary warning that comes with most real candles. Never leave a burning candle alone and please keep it out of reach of kids, pets and all things flammable.
