Decoupage a Set of Wood Coasters Plus Effortless Artwork For Fall

I always find such pretty napkins at the dollar store, no matter what the season, and it’s hard for me to resist buying new ones even when I already have plenty at home. Apart from coming in handy when you have company, they are also great for decoupaging. Since I haven’t done any decoupage for a long while, I thought I’d try my hand at making a set of coasters using some plain wood squares I found in my stash.

I think my efforts paid off nicely. Pick up some dollar store cocktail napkins in a pattern you love, and decoupage a set of wood coasters for fall.

Project 1–Wood Coasters

Supplies Used and Recommendations:

I already had a package of these cocktail napkins on hand. Cut into four equal squares, they were the perfect size to cover the wood squares I had on hand.

The wood pieces I had in my stash were about 4-1/2 inches square.

I began by cutting the cocktail napkin into four equal pieces by cutting along each of the fold lines. You only use the top layer of the napkin when you decoupage. I find that napkins are easier to separate from an inside cut, rather than an outer edge.

Under normal circumstances, you would give the wood a coat of white paint before applying the napkin, but as the napkin I was using had a background that matched the wood, I skipped that part this time. I just spread a thin layer of dishwasher safe Mod Podge over the wood, centred the napkin square over top and carefully smoothed it down. There was just enough napkin left to cover all four sides of the coaster, too.

I covered four wood squares the same way, to make a set of four coasters and gave each coaster a top coat of dishwasher safe Mod Podge. Naturally, you’re not going to be putting wood in the dishwasher, but dishwasher safe Mod Podge will help to repel moisture from spills or condensation from cold drinks.

I cut squares from a sheet of peel and stick cork from Dollar Tree, and adhered them to the bottom of each coaster. This served the dual purpose of covering the plain wood on the bottom of the coasters, as well as protecting furniture from scratches. You could also glue on pieces of felt for this purpose.

If you are painting the coasters before decoupaging, you could also use those plastic dots that are used to prevent cupboard doors from banging shut, applying one dot to each corner.

I like the way my new coasters turned out. You could make some like this for any season and even give them as gifts.

Project 2 — Sunflower Wall Art

Supplies Used and Recommendations:

  • 2 long trays
  • 1 sheet long, 2-image sunflower wall stickers (Dollar Tree)

I love the large wall stickers that you can get at Dollar Tree. These long sheets have two different designs, one on either side. When I saw this set of sunflowers, I knew I could make something pretty and cheap for my walls.

The trays I used were a recent find at Dollarama. They come as a set of two and are made of lightweight plastic with a pretty filigree edging that you can get in either gold or silver. I’ll always pick gold over silver, but that’s just my preference and I think the gold complements the stickers I used.

You could also use the long charger trays from Dollar Tree. Just give them a coat of white paint before you add the stickers. If you’re ambitious, consider painting a gold or silver border around the outside edges.

You have to be careful peeling the long stickers from the backing, as they can tear easily. Then it’s just a matter of centring each sticker in the middle of the two trays and smoothing them down. The stickers were a bit longer than the tray, so I cut off the excess.

Whatever pieces of the image that reach beyond the centre of the trays, can be smoothed around the edges.

Add the two bee decals that come with each flower to both trays and you’re done!

As these trays are so light, I hung them on my kitchen wall using Command velcro strips. I love how this artwork has significantly brightened the room and it was so easy!
