I have been into decoupage lately. You can decoupage using fabric, paper napkins or any thin paper. And you can decoupage onto different surfaces, as well. In the fall, I used paper napkins to turn some wood squares into seasonal coasters. When I found an unfinished ceramic trinket tray at Dollar Tree recently, I thought it would be fun to craft a spring trinket tray using tissue paper.

Step 1 – Choose a Tissue Paper Pattern
Dollar Tree has some lovely tissue papers to choose from in the gift wrap section. Whether you’re into modern or traditional decor, you’re sure to find a pattern you like. I had this lovely leaf design tissue paper in my stash that I thought would be perfect to decoupage onto a small ceramic tray I also found at Dollar Tree.
Step 2: Apply Mod Podge to Trinket Tray
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the entire trinket tray. I wanted the entire tray to be covered in the tissue paper, so I added Mod Podge everywhere, including on the outer edges.
Step 3: Apply Tissue Paper to Trinket Tray
Cut a section of the tissue paper so that it hangs over the edges about half an inch and carefully smooth it down a section at a time. As there are curves in the tray, you need to pay special attention to making sure the tissue paper in the corners is laying flat.
When the Mod Podge is dry, use a sanding block or a piece of sandpaper in a downward motion around the edges to remove the excess tissue paper. Then add a second layer of Mod Podge to seal.
Step 4: Display as an Art Piece
I like the idea of displaying this little tray on an easel. You could also put a hanger on the back and add it to a gallery wall.
Step 4: Personalize and Use as a Trinket Tray
Of course, you could just use the trinket tray for its original purpose. When I was scrolling through Amazon, I noticed that some of the trinket trays they had could be personalized with an initial. I had some embossed gold letter stickers in my craft stash, so I added my initial to the bottom right-hand corner of the trinket tray. Even though the letter is a sticker, it needed some extra glue added to hold it in place. Some letter stickers that are just a bit larger, would be ideal. Choose a font that fits your style.

As a crafter, I like things that are fully customizable, such as these plain ceramic trays. I love the way my finished trinket tray looks. It’s not only useful but it’s also attractive. Leave it sitting on your dresser, on a vanity table or on the bathroom counter to hold rings, hair ties and other small objects.
