It’s true that this is the season of giving but it’s also true that, if you shop at a dollar store, you won’t have to spend a lot to show you care. You might not think that a dollar store could supply great gift ideas but it’s true. The dollar store is a great place to start your Christmas shopping. To get you started, here are just a few ideas for gifts for anyone on your list.

A Gift For the New Baby

For a newly arrived December baby, we filled a playful bathroom wastebasket about three-quarters full of newsprint, topped it with pastel tissue paper and then filled it with a 14 oz. bottle of baby powder, a 12 oz. bottle of baby lotion, a 15 oz. bottle of baby shampoo, a package of four water toys, a four-pack of baby washcloths and a vinyl covered baby book.

A Gift Idea for Men

Men can be particularly hard to buy for. We copied this gift idea from one we saw in a major department store one Christmas. Purchase a six-inch aluminum pail to stand in as an ice bucket, add two beer glasses, a set of ceramic coasters in an appropriate pattern like playing cards and a bag of Planter’s peanuts. This gift cost half of that department store gift that contained plastic beer glasses.

Family Gift Ideas

This gift could be for a neighbourhood family you’re friendly with. We included four packs of hot chocolate; one for every member of this hypothetical family of four, a bag of Hershey’s kisses and a family-sized chocolate bar. Display it all on a sturdy glass dish the mom will be sure to appreciate and add an ornament and a couple of candy canes.

Another idea for gifting a household, would be to give them something homemade to share. For example, package your homemade pancake mix in an attractive glass canister and put it in a mixing bowl lined with a crisp new tea towel and a small bottle of store-bought syrup. Add a wooden spoon and a wide spatula and, barring the ingredients for your recipe and the syrup, this gift costs only a few bucks. Don’t forget to include written instructions for making the pancakes.

Spa Gifts for Women

For the hard-working mom on your list, the tried and true bath supplies gift basket is always a good bet. We put ours together to include lavender bath soak, bath beads, a pumice scrubber, a nail brush set and a soap-shaped candle. Add some chocolate and an ornament to complete.

Hostess Gift Ideas

A tea candle set, including candle, candleholder and candle ring, packed with two angel figurines in a reusable storage box makes a pretty gift for a hostess, a hairdresser or perhaps from a child to a favorite aunt.

With a touch of imagination and a do-it-yourself resolve, you can give these easy Christmas gifts to friends and family without paying retail prices.
