Eight Quick Tips For Home Decorating

Rub on Transfers

A simple rub on transfer elevated the look of this dollar store nightlight

Rub on transfers are so easy to use and can add so much to a plain surface. I used a leaf transfer to dress up the nightlight in my bathroom. I then sprayed it with a sealer I had on hand to protect it from moisture. Mod Podge would work just as well for that purpose.

Try using rub on transfers on other things in your home. They will adhere to glass and wood, as well as plastic surfaces.

Use Garden Pieces Indoors

There’s no reason you can’t use an attractive garden figurine inside. All I did was glue some felt to the bottom of this heavy weight one to protect the floor and I had a great doorstop. You can always paint the little stone birds and mushrooms you find at the dollar store, so they fit in with your decorating style.

Cover it with Contact Paper

Line the back of a bookshelf, cover a worn table top, use it to upcycle cardboard boxes for storage – I’ve even seen people recover ugly kitchen countertops with contact paper. There’s so much this versatile product can do to give your home a fresh look.

Decorate with Window Clings

Wrap a window cling around a cylinder vase for an instant upgrade

This is another versatile product that I love to use (usually not on my windows.) For an instant pop of colour, wrap a clear cylinder vase in some pretty florals.

I often use seasonal window clings to dress up the glass in cabinet doors.

Rethink Shot Glasses

Shot glasses are perfect to use as vases for displaying tiny flowers like periwinkles. I’ve also used them as candle holders for taper candles by filling them part way with enough sand to support the candles.

Decorate with Small Stickers

I used a row of puffy fabric floral stickers around the middle of this vase to dress it up for spring and summer. You could do this with other small stickers for any season.

Use Wall Stickers in Unexpected Places

An easy and super quick way to dress up a plain dollar store wastebasket is to apply a wall sticker to it.

Display Pretty Plates

Decorative plates don’t always have to be hung in a grouping on the wall. Try displaying one of your favourites on a picture easel.
