DIY Christmas Gift Tags

Gift tags are cheap to buy and who can blame us if we want to take the easy route during the busiest time of the year. I wonder if anyone ever really looks at the tags on their gifts anyway. Someone hands you a present and perhaps even says who it’s from and that’s all you need to know, isn’t it? Still, this year I decided to make a special effort to grab my family’s attention. I hope that these DIY Christmas gift tags will do that and they are so easy to make.

Use materials you already have on hand. Things like scrap wrapping paper, old Christmas cards, sections of old gift bags and even pretty napkins, make these Christmas gift tags stand out from the ordinary.

DIY Christmas Gift Card Ideas

Supplies Used and Recommendations:

Idea 1: DIY Gift Tags Using Christmas Cards

I thought this Christmas card would make a lovely gift tag. I wanted to use the top part of the tree, with the star.

Because Christmas cards are generally sturdier than other papers, I didn’t need to glue it to one of the white tags I’ll be using for other tags. However, I used one as a guide to cut the Christmas card into the shape I wanted.

I used a hole punch…

…threaded the twine through and added a colour-coordinated bead onto the twine to finish this DIY gift tag. It’s hard to see in the picture, but this card had a lot of sparkly stuff on it already, so I didn’t add anything else. Now all I need to do it to add “to” and “from” on the back. I think this will make a beautiful gift tag to add to a present.

This is another example of using a Christmas card. All I did was cut the design into a tag shape using a white tag as a template, like before. This time, I hot glued a wood snowflake embellishment to the upper left-hand corner for an extra bit of colour.

Idea 2: DIY Gift Tags Using Wrapping Paper

Use some of your leftover wrapping paper to make unique gift tags. Using my trusty glue stick I attached a piece of it to the white gift tag then trimmed the edges with scissors. Use your pokey tool or a pen tip to poke a hole through the paper where the hole goes.

I had some laser cut wood pieces in my stash, so I painted one of the sleighs red and hot glued it to the tag.

This pretty snowflake wrapping paper makes a beautiful gift tag, too. Again, I used a glue stick to attach it to a white tag, making sure one of the large snowflakes was centred on it and used scissors to trim the edges even with the tag. After painting one of the laser cut wood reindeers gold, I hot glued it below the snowflake.

Idea 3: DIY Gift Tag Using a Napkin

These pretty napkins were found at Dollarama. I know that you can decoupage napkins onto different surfaces, but wasn’t sure it would work here.

I cut out one square of the napkin and separated the top from the bottom layer. Next, I cut around the reindeer pair and used my glue stick to centre the piece onto the plain white tag. You can, if needed, gently peel the image up to reposition it, smoothing out the wrinkles as you go.

I finished this DIY gift tag by using the glue stick to add three snowflake confetti pieces to it. You could use a coat of Mod Podge to seal this, but after all, it’s a gift tag and isn’t meant to be kept.

This Christmas gift tag turned out better than I had expected it would. I absolutely love this one!

Idea 4: DIY Gift Tag Using an Image from a Gift Bag

I liked this gift bag with the gold foil pattern on it.

So I cut out a section of it, glued it to a white tag and trimmed the excess. Then I added a 3-D effect by gluing a bit of a wired pine stem and a couple of berries to the bottom of it.

DIY Christmas Gift Tag Collection

These DIY Christmas gift tags took very little time to make and they’ll add a unique decorative touch to the presents I’m giving this year. As I discovered, you can use many different materials to create something outside the ordinary. All you need are some plain gift tags, a few inexpensive embellishments and whatever paper scraps you may have on hand.

I think these gift tags are pretty enough to be used as tree ornaments after they’ve served the original purpose. What do you think?
