DIY All-Season Valentine Sign

For Valentine’s Day this year, I wanted to make DIY all-season Valentine decor; something that could be left out well past the 14th. After all, love is something that should be celebrated every day of the year.

This Valentine’s Day sign consists of a wood heart, a pretty napkin, scrapbook paper, Tumbling Tower Blocks and a small sign. Here’s how to bring all these different pieces together to make a DIY all-season Valentine sign.

Supplies Used and Recommendations:

I like this little sign that I picked up from Dollar Tree last Christmas. It’s the perfect size for what I had in mind for a DIY all-season Valentine sign.

Step 1: Paint the Frame

You could leave the frame as is, if you like, but I chose to lighten it up with white acrylic paint. It took two coats of paint to cover it.

Step 2: Choose a Background Paper

I checked through my store of craft paper and came across this vintage-style paper that I thought would be the perfect backdrop for the napkin image I was using. The sheets from this small paper pack are only 5.9 inches square, so I used two of them to cover the back of the frame, trimming the excess and matching the paper where it overlapped.

I used a glue stick to attach the paper inside the frame.

Step 3: Decoupage Napkin to Painted Wood Heart

I think I got these napkins from Dollarama. They have an understated Valentine theme and a vintage look about them that I find appealing.

I have better success using a glue stick to decoupage napkins. Make sure you cover all of the edges with whatever medium you’re using.

Separate the two layers of napkin, choose the section you want to use and carefully smooth it onto the painted wood heart.

Step 4: Trim Excess Valentine Napkin

I used an emery board in a downward motion, to remove the excess napkin from the heart. Emery boards are great as stand-ins for regular sandpaper or sanding blocks, as they can easily reach into small areas like the dip in the top of the wood heart.

Step 5: Cover Heart With  Mod Podge

After the napkin was glued on, I gave the heart a coating of Mod Podge to seal the image into place.

Step 6: Hot Glue Heart to Left-Hand Side of Frame

Next, I hot glued the heart to the edges of the frame so that it overhung just a bit on the left-hand side. To cover the spot I’d inadvertently torn when applying the napkin, I attached a small puffy heart sticker. Then I thought I’d cover up the heart in the bird’s beak to match, then added a third puffy heart so the design looked balanced.

Even though these are stickers, I had to apply a dab of hot glue to the backs of each heart to ensure they stayed put.

Step 7: Add a Message to the DIY All-Season Valentine Sign

I wanted to elevate the Valentine message somehow and decided on using Tumbling Tower Blocks to do that. Because the middle word is small, I cut a Tumbling Tower Block in half using my mitre shears. I painted the tower blocks using white acrylic paint to match the frame.

Then, using some small letter stickers from my stash, I attached each of the three words to the blocks. The message “Love is Kind,” is a sentiment that is relevant any time of the year. It’s part of a Bible verse and is from I Corinthians 13.

I didn’t seal the words with Mod Podge, but that would probably be advisable.

Step 8: Hot Glue Valentine Message to Sign

I used hot glue to attach each word block to the right-hand side of the sign, making sure to space them out evenly.

Step 9: Add Greenery to Valentine Sign

I decided the sign need a bit of greenery, but I didn’t want to overwhelm it, so I found this small wired leaf garland in my stash. I cut a piece about 9 1/2 inches, long enough to cover down one side and part way across the top of the sign.

A bit of hot glue in the corner and on either end of the greenery was enough to hold it in place.

I’m rather pleased with how my DIY all-season Valentine sign turned out. You can hang it on the wall or prop it up on a shelf. This is the kind of decor piece that can be displayed well past Valentine’s Day, into spring and summer. It would also make a great decoration for a bedroom any time of the year.
