I’m a bit obsessed with cloches. Large or small, I love them all. Did you know that you can make an extra-large cloche for your indoor decor using a charger plate and a garden cloche? I’ve done it before. This time, using simple supplies, most of them from the dollar store, I made a summer cloche using butterflies and mushrooms. Here’s how:

A Summer Cloche Using Butterflies and Mushrooms

Supplies Used and Recommendations:

Step 1: Arrange Mushrooms on Charger Plate

I had this woodgrain-look charger plate on hand. It originally came from Dollar Tree and perfectly suited my outdoorsy theme. I arranged my three ceramic mushrooms on the charger plate and surrounded them with reindeer moss.

The largest mushroom is one I had on hand from a previous year. The two smaller mushrooms came from Dollar Tree. They are usually available during the spring.

Step 2: Add Some Fern

To add to the look of a forest, I used a stem from a bunch of fern I bought recently. You can glue it to the largest mushroom so it stands up but I just tucked it in between two of the mushrooms.

Step 3: Add Some Flower Stems to a Moss Ball

I had recently bought a spray of small pink flowers from Dollarama and I had some faux moss balls in my stash. I cut three lengths of flowers (any colourful small flower will do) and inserted the stems into three different moss balls. The wire stems were easy to poke into the moss ball, but you could use a pokey tool to make a hole, if you need to.

Step 4: Add a Butterfly to Each Moss Ball

I chose three different coloured butterflies from my collection and made a hole in the back of each one where I could insert a piece of thin floral wire. I cut the floral wire in three different heights, adjusting the tallest one as necessary, so that it would fit under the cloche I was using.

You will need a dot of hot glue where the wire goes into the butterfly, to keep it in place.

Next, I inserted the wire into a hole I made in the moss ball with the pokey tool and added some hot glue to secure it.

Step 5: Glue Moss Balls Onto the Charger Plate

Next, I hot glued the three different moss balls onto the charger plate, spacing them evenly around the mushrooms. I had to push some of the moss aside to make sure the moss balls were securely fastened to the charger plate.

Finished Butterfly Cloche

Then I carefully covered everything with the plastic garden cloche and bent the floral wire so that my butterflies were flying in different directions. I also had to adjust the butterflies so that they weren’t bumping up against the sides of the cloche.

I struggled to get a good picture of the finished cloche, but I’m really happy with the result. At about 12 inches tall, it makes a striking addition to my indoor summer decor

Dollar Tree has the small plastic garden cloches during the spring and summer, so if you can’t find a large cloche, just scale down all the elements to fit under the smaller version.
