LED candles are popular among those of us who are hesitant to burn real candles indoors. But, let’s face it, they can be less inspiring than coloured wax tapers and tealights. Here are four creative ways to dress up the tried and true LED candle. (The last idea is my favourite!)

Remember these battery-operated candles? If you still have some of these, you can easily ditch the gold base to make them look more high-end.

As these candles are open on the end, use a small piece of white masking tape to cover the bottoms.

Idea One – Use LED Candles in a Propagation Station
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- propagation station
- white masking tape
- decorative sand

I forget where I bought this. It’s meant to hold water and plant cuttings, but I’ve filled each tube with sand at different levels…

…and inserted three of the taped candles into the sand to make a unique mini candelabra. If you wanted to, you could paint the wood stand in a colour that matches your decor. The masking tape prevents the sand from getting inside the candles, which could potentially cause them to stop working.
You could also use different coloured sand in the tubes, to add more personality to the display.
Idea Two – How To Make LED Candles Fit in Candlesticks
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- 3 candlesticks of varying heights
- masking tape

Another option, using the same LED candles, is to use them in traditional candlesticks. With the masking tape on the bottom, they fit snugly into these Dollar Tree candlesticks.
Idea Three – Paint LED Tea Light Candles
Supplies Used and Recommendations:
- LED tea lights (available in colours)
- acrylic paint
- Mod Podge
- tulip votive holders
- nano tape

If you want to, you can paint those white dollar store tea lights different colours. Just tape off the plastic flame and apply two or three coats of acrylic paint. When dry, finish with a couple of coats of Mod Podge to keep the paint from scratching off.

The gold candlesticks with leaves will be familiar with Dollar Tree shoppers. I found the clear glass tulip votives at Dollarama. Placing the painted votive candles inside the glass holders adds an extra pop of colour to spring and summer decor.
You can glue the votives to the top of each candlestick but I’ve been employing a different method lately. I just folded a small piece of two-sided nano tape over the top of the candlesticks and added the votives on top. The tape offers a strong hold, but I can still easily take this decoration apart and use the pieces for other projects later.
Idea Four – Wrap LED Candles in Rhinestone Sticker Strips
Supplies Used and Recommendations:

You can buy packages of long jeweled sticker strips in different colours and designs at dollar stores. I believe I found these at Dollarama. There were a few different designs.

Starting at the top, wrap one strip around a Dollar Tree LED taper candle in a spiral design. You will need to cut a small piece of another strip to finish wrapping the bottom of the candle, but the designs match up perfectly.
I again used the masking tape trick to get these narrow candles to fit into the candlesticks. I love the way the finished candles look. This trick makes a plain white LED candle look bespoke.
