3 Simple Way to Make Dollar Tree Canvas Art Look High-End

This idea came from YouTuber Liz Fenwick, who used two of the Dollar Tree canvas art pictures and repurposed them to make beautiful framed art on a large scale. I had already picked up one of these canvas art pieces and knew I wanted to do something with it, but hadn’t decided what until I saw Liz’s idea. So thanks, Liz!

My idea is on a much smaller scale but I love the way these pieces turned out. Try this simple way to make dollar tree canvas art look high-end using 8 x 10 frames and pre-cut photo mats.

To copy this idea, you will need:

  • small canvas art of your choice (Dollar Tree)
  • pre-cut photo mat to fit an 8×10-inch frame (on hand)
  • 8×10-inch frame (on hand)
  • utility knife
  • tape

Frame Horizontally

I already had a supply of photo mats in my stash. I chose an 8 x 10 that had an opening of 6-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches. An opening of 5 x 7 would work just as well. Some dollar stores sell pre-cut mats.

I’m also repurposing an 8 x 10 gold frame I already had on hand and, of course, Dollar Tree sells these, as well.

I used a utility knife to cut the canvas off the original frame and lay the mat on top of the flattened out image to determine which part of the picture I wanted to highlight. Then, I just cut off the excess canvas so that it fit within the mat.

Once you have the image centred where you want it, just anchor it to the matte using tape.

Put the mat in the frame and you’re done. The white mat and gold coloured frame make this artwork look so high-end! It was so easy to do and cost me practically nothing to make. I just love the way it looks!

Frame Vertically

You can also frame a canvas vertically, if the picture calls for it.

Framed this way, I was able to include the main element, the cabin, and a good portion of the sky, which I thought helps to emphasize the remoteness of the place.

Include Most of the Image

I love this image and wanted to keep as much of it as I could, so I took the time to remove the staples from the frame, instead of cutting it.

Once I had the canvas removed from the wood frame, I cut off the white edges surrounding the print.

Using the same 8 x 10 gold frame, I turned the insert around so that the white side was showing. Then I trimmed the image down a bit more and glued it to the centre of paper, leaving just enough white around the picture to form a faux mat.

Alternately, you could simply trim the canvas down until it filled the frame completely. I love the way my three new pieces of art look on my wall.
